Yakushima is a subtropical island off the southern coast of Kyushu and ia part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is home to over 1900 species of plants, flowers and trees.
The island is also the wettest place in Japan and there is a local saying that it “rains 35 days a month”. Another feature is that while Yakushima is a subtropical island it has mountains nearly 2000 metres high on which snow falls and remains for several months each year.
The island is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of the oldest living trees in Japan. Trees over 1000 years old are called by the islanders “yakusugi” and some of the oldest trees are thought to be between 3000 to 7000 years old. The forest was logged extensively in the past but today it has recovered completely. In 1993 some areas of the forest were declared a National World Heritage Site. Most visitors to the island come to hike through the forests and view the ancient trees.
