Kyoto was the imperial capital for 1000 years. It was the centre of Japanese culture and it illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, especially religious architecture. The art of Japanese gardens developed in Kyoto also and it has influenced landscape gardening all over the globe.

When it was built Kyoto was modelled on the cities of ancient China. It was Japam’s capital and the Emperor’s residence from 794 until 1868.

Over the centuries it was destroyed by wars and fires. During WWII however, it was spared bombing and destruction because of its many historic temples, shrines and other historic buildings which are so important today. They were added to the list of World Heritage sites in 1994.
