Himeji is a city in Hyogo Prefecture and is known for its castle which can be seen for miles around. It is very famous for a number of reasons but mainly because it is such a fine example of 17th century castle architecture.
It was never destroyed in any way and remains in its original form which is quite breathtaking. It is a wonderful example of fusing its main purpose of defence with aesthetic appeal both its appearance and architecture. It consists of 83 buildings swith clever defence devices of the 17th century and is a truly spectacular construction.
As such it is a national treasure and was declared a World Heritage site in 1993 by UNESCO.
